Q: What do you do?
A: We provide experienced part-time General Counsel services and Administration services to small to mid-sized businesses in Western North Carolina.
Q: What is a General Counsel?
A: A General Counsel is a lawyer who is a full time employee of his client and serves only that client as its chief legal officer, responsible for the entire legal portfolio of the business.
Q: What are General Counsel services?
A: Legal services rendered in the fashion of a General Counsel, i.e. the management of a company’s entire legal portfolio through the combination of doing the work, preparing the work and managing the work of outside counsel.
Q: What is “Administration”?
A: Administration is management of law-related areas such as human resources, employee benefits, real estate, insurance and environment, health and safety. It is the application of legal theory in your business practices.
Q: Why would my business benefit from Counsel Plus’ services?
A: For the same reasons that big businesses benefit from hiring in-house General Counsel full time – the efficiencies associated with having a skilled lawyer who is intimately familiar with your business handling all of your legal matters through a combination of performing and managing outside services.
Q: Aren’t you just like other lawyers?
A: No. Lawyers in private practice typically concentrate in one sub-area of the law, for example divorce, wills, real estate closings, tax, bankruptcy, etc. By contrast we concentrate on pulling together all the strands of law that come into play in running a business, cutting across the boundaries of traditional subject matter areas. It is a client-centered approach rather than the traditional lawyer-centered approach.
Q: Where do you work?
A: We prefer to do your work at your site, working alongside your employees like a full time corporate General Counsel. This helps us understand your business, your employees and your issues and in turn results in better, more practical counsel to you. If working on your site is not convenient for you, we operate out of our own offices.
Q: How do you work?
A: We develop a work/billing structure that suits your needs in consultation with you. Our ultimate goal is to work with you on a long term basis as part-time employees of your business. Before we get to that point however we will also work on a traditional hourly basis, a flat fee project basis, a monthly retainer basis or other alternative basis.
Q: Can we meet with you at no charge to explore whether Counsel Plus’ services are right for my business?
A: Yes. We’ll be happy to meet with you in your offices for a free one hour consultation.
